Folks who are looking for a cute little portable computing device without cost being a factor might want to look at the new and improved Sony VAIO P Series. The original which was unveiled to the masses at CES a year ago comes across as a wondrous portable computing device, where it packs enough power to get basic work done on the go while maintaining a form factor that allows you to stash it in your back jeans pocket without missing a beat. Well, the VAIO P is now new and improved, and you will also be able to enjoy an array of built-in one-touch buttons which allows you to instantly access the web, adjust screen resolution and even tune-up your PC from the get go. A trackpad has been built directly into the LCD bezel for a novel way of interaction, while a mobile nav grip have also been added to make life easier than ever, letting you access content on-the-go. Sony also knows that you want to look good while using gizmos, which is why they introduced it in five vibrant new colors – electric orange, neon green, hot pink, icy white and classic black. Let’s check out its specifications and features further after the jump.

Measuring roughly the size of a business envelope and somewhat as thin as a cellphone, the VAIO P Series tips the scales at a mere 1.4 pounds, where despite its diminutive size, it will integrate full PC features and capabilities, letting you edit documents, watch online videos, and organize photos all with an ultraportable design. Of course, battery life in such a small device will not be conducive for you to work for long hours on end without a power plug nearby. Still, let it not discourage you from picking one up since you get interesting features such as these :-

The new PC features one-touch buttons providing convenient shortcuts with just a click.

Press the WEB button, and this Instant mode option launches directly into your browser. You can even press it when the PC is turned off and it will launch you into your web browser without a full boot through the Windows® operating system.

The ASSIST button launches Sony’s own VAIO Care software, an easy-to-use program that lets you tune-up, maintain, update and troubleshoot the PC.

A resolution button lets you increase or decrease screen resolution for optimal viewing.

The P Series also boasts a unique mobile nav grip to surf the web without a mouse or keyboard. A trackpad and left- and right-click buttons are built right into the LCD bezel, providing a creative solution to navigate the web and a new way to interact with a PC.

It features a high-resolution, 1600 x 768, LED backlit 8-inch ultra-wide display (diagonal), making it easy to view everything from entire spreadsheets to full web pages. Plus, for a more convenient way to read long web pages without all the scrolling, turn the P Series on its side to change the viewing orientation from landscape mode to portrait mode. A new array of stylish carrying cases and wireless mice are now available.

GPS and Digital Compass

Accelerometer sensor

Built-in Everywair 3G

Clear, bright, widescreen VAIO Display Plus

Easy to use with Quick Web Access

One glance at how the Sony Premier 3 Walkman opens up and it reminds me of the Nokia N93 when it was first released, featuring a dual-hinge system that folds in two ways, depending on the type of function that you want to access. The pink color associated with this Sony release will appeal to selected folks, and what makes it interesting is the ability to rip CDs directly via its 3.5mm hack. Unfortunately, Sony engineers seemed to have overlooked one crucial factor – storage. The use of a regular microSD memory card slot limits this to a mere 2GB of storage space, so you go figure.

The Sony Bravia XEL is the first Organic Light Emitting Diode (Oled) television to come to market in Europe and uses completely new technology, different from previous flat screen models such as LCD and Plasma

The world’s thinnest television goes on sale today in Britain, measuring a mere 3mm, no thicker than a pound coin but costing 3,489 of them.

Sony’s Bravia XEL promises to transform the television industry, despite its high price, by offering viewers the crispest, most colourful pictures ever. Because it has such a lightweight screen, Sony predicts the £3,489 model will revive the idea of portable televisions, with families able to move the gadget from room to room.

The XEL is the first Organic Light Emitting Diode (Oled) television to come to market in Europe and uses completely new technology from previous flat screen models such as LCD and Plasma.

Normal flat screen televisions use a backlight to produce the picture on screen, but Oled screens actually emit their own radiance, which means the blacks are pure black, rather than the dark grey you get on most televisions.

The contrast ratio on a good LCD television is about 30,000 to one. On the Oled it is 1 million to one.

Oled televisions were first unveiled as a prototype a year ago, but Sony is the first company to start selling them in shops. However, because the technology is still so expensive and fragile, the biggest screen available is just 11 inches wide.

Jonathan White, head of televisions for Sony UK, insisted there had been lots of interest in the machines, despite the small size and high price.

“It is the sort of product that people who have to have the latest technology will be interested in. At this very top end of the market, these sort of products are almost recession proof.”

Sony is just one of many consumer electronics giants to be hit by the global recession and last week said it expected to make its first loss for 14 years.

According to Sony, it has received “hundreds” of pre-orders from British consumers. Most of the models sold in Japan, where they went on sale last year, ended up in people’s studies as desktop televisions, or in kitchens.

Television experts believe that while the technology will ultimately take off, Sony’s model is too small and too expensive to prove popular.

“We are in a recession, for goodness sake,” said Ian Morris, TV editor of the technology website Cnet, “Okay it looks very cool, and the pictures are amazing, but at just 11 inches it is way too expensive for Joe Public.”

The XEL is first going on sale in Sony’s shops this week, and in mainstream shops, such as John Lewis and Currys, in March.

Sony just launched its DSC-G3, the first WIFI digital camera that we’ve seen with a web browser. The goal is to up upload photos to the web quickly, and that’s a WIFI thing, really. The first good news is that the Sony G3 can connect to secure and public WIFI hotspots, including hotels and airports. These have been known to be a pain on some portable devices. The second highlight is that customers will have a free WI-FI connection with AT&T (USA) . Sony did a similar deal for the Mylo 2, and it’s certainly a good thing.

Thanks to the browser, there’s no need for a special service or API. Users just go to the website as they would do on a computer. The downside is that it is likely a bit more complicated and time consuming than having a specialized service, like Eye-Fi

  Quick Specs

4GB internal memory

3.5” display (0.9 Megapixel)

$500 now at Sonystyle.com

The DSC-G3 also comes with a lot of smartness found in recent digicam: smile detection and so on. We’ll let you browse the product page to see those, as they are fairly boring.

PlayStation Portable – Now with Included Microphone and Brighter Screen
The latest Playstation Portable revision, the PSP-3000, has everything the older PSPs had but now includes a built-in microphone, which lets you take advantage of voice features in some games as well as the PSP’s built-in Skype functionality without having to use a headset. The new PSP-3000 also includes an improved anti-reflective screen that offers higher contrast and clearer visibility in well-lit places and can even be used outdoors.

A Full Entertainment System in Your Hands
The PSP was designed to handle all varieties of applications and entertainment — music, video, communication, wireless networking, and, of course, gaming. Users will enjoy top-notch 3D games with high-quality, full-motion video, and high-fidelity audio. The 4.3-inch wide screen display is bright and beautiful, and works well under many different lighting conditions. If you prefer, you can also connect your PSP to your TV. The PSP utilizes the Universal Media Disc (UMD) for a storage medium, each of which holds 1.8 GB of data.

Hundred of Games to Choose From
The PSP gaming library is hundreds of titles strong and covers a wide variety of genres. Whether you are seeking the hard hits of football or the strategy of a puzzle game, there’s sure to be many games for you. The PSP is capable of graphics quality that is comparable to the PlayStation 2, but in a pocket-sized package that you can take wherever you go.

Watch Movies and Videos On The Go
When you just want to sit back and enjoy a movie on a long plane trip, the PSP has you covered. The PSP offers two options to do this: you can either purchase full-length movies and TV shows on UMD, or you can download videos onto your computer and transfer them on a Memory Stick Duo for playing on your PSP. Included in the package is the movie National Treasure 2 on UMD.

You can also watch recorded television content downloaded to a Memory Stick Duo with the TiVo-To-Go service. (Please note that this requires $24.95 fee, you must have a TiVo Series2 connected to your home network.)

Listen to Your Music Collection Anywhere
With the ability to play MP3, WAV, WMA, ATRAC3+, and MP4 files, you can easily use your PSP as an audio player. Simply place your music on a Memory Stick Duo, and you can navigate your collection using the PSP’s XMB (XrossMediaBar) to select your song to play.

Built-in WiFi allows for Internet Browsing and Online Gaming
With built-in WiFi, you can access the Internet from any accessible hotspot. Once connected, you can surf the Web and download exclusive demos and content for your PSP from the PlayStation Store.

The WiFi also allows you to battle other gamers, both over the Internet and in your local vicinity.

Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters Game Included
With this Limited Edition set, you’ll get to play Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters right out of the box. A combination of a platformer and shooter, Size Matters delivers the over-the-top humor and fun that the series has come to be known for.

As is Ratchet and Clank’s hallmark, the game features large cache of weapons, each of which can be upgraded to become larger and stronger. It’s the sheer wackiness of the weapons that makes the game so much fun: among the many weapons at your disposal, you’ll have the option of wielding a shotgun, a pistol that shoots killer bees, and a gun that shoots out robots.

The game makes full use of the PSP hardware and incorporates multiple lighting and particle effects without any slowdown in gameplay.

With this Limited Edition Entertainment Pack, you won’t be lacking in entertainment options when you’re on the run. In fact, you might actually start looking forward to your long commute.

According to “publisher sources”, Eurogamer are reporting that games for a true successor to the PlayStation Portable – a PSP2, if you will – are already in development. If correct, this means Sony’s second handheld console is, what…a year away? Two at the most? Sounds about right, when you consider the original PSP launched in 2004. Five-to-six years is a healthy lifespan for a handheld.

Still, that’s all pie-in-the-sky stuff at the moment. It’s for the distant future. Closer to the present is news that, in the meantime, Sony plans another iteration of the current PSP, the PSP-4000. Due for release in late 2009, no other details were mentioned, though with a new PSP on the horizon any changes would surely be minor ones.

Sony is set to debut a new 16 and 32GB drag and drop Walkman during CES 2009, according to trusted inside sources. This will be the most advanced music, video and photo Walkman music player ever released by Sony to date. While it was revealed before to Wired that Sony’s new Walkman would have Wi-Fi capabilities, we have now learned that Sony’s new Walkman will also be touchscreen and WQVGA. The touchscreen will not be the usual LCD, but a brilliant three inch OLED with a contrast ratio around 10k. OLED display capabilities in terms of color reproduction are far beyond the average LCD, which means 100% color reproduction across a wider viewing angle.

While most of the usual menu structure of the current Walkman series will be retained in this new model, there are several new exciting features included. For example, upon listening to an artist, you may click on the artist name and watch music videos of the artist on YouTube through Wi-Fi (WPA and WEP support included). Additionally, there will be a Youtube icon on the main screen that will allow full access to the website – search, pause, FF/RW included very similar to Youtube access on the iPhone/iTouch. Additionally, this new Walkman will be able to subscribe to audio podcast and Crackle video feeds; this means automatic download of new updates, the ability to delete old feed content, all over Wi-Fi. Audio codec support includes MP3, WMA, AAC, PCM, while video codec support is AVC (h.264), MPEG-4 and WMV.

There will be built-in search capabilities that can be used to learn more about your favorite artist, and users will be able to purchase full CD’s of their favorite artists through the Walkman at Amazon. A powerful S-Master digital amplifier is built into this device as well as digital noise canceling to ensure optimal sound. On top of all of these impressive features, Sony has also included a FM radio to truly differentiate this product amongst the competition. Also, while the product shots above do not show hardware buttons for music control (previous track, play/pause, next track and volume), we believe this device will have dedicated hardware buttons for this functionality.

When surveyed as to whether customers would prefer a stand alone Blu-ray player over a Sony PS3 with same player, the majority preferred to pay less for the player and have a hi-def video game console tossed in for good measure. The study, conducted by ABI Research shows that more than half of consumers aren’t thrilled with the obscene price point of a stand alone alone player, preferring to add value to their purpose by going with the Playstation 3 instead. The study goes on to say that, although 23 percent of consumers are planning a Blu-ray purchase, even those aren’t in a hurry to get one, choosing to wait until at least 2009 before they take the Blu-ray leap.

In addition, the study also found that a whopping 87% of Playstation 3 users do watch Blu-ray movies on their PS3 player. The study’s findings are great news for SONY who is enjoying brisk sales of the Blu-ray capable PlayStation 3 game console. So, when one considers that Blu-ray sales are staggering at the current price of between $350 and 500, it isn’t surprising at all that consumers would rather have a great gaming platform tossed in for good measure.

Kudos to Sony for being so forward thinking in tossing in the Blu-ray player from the outset.

This PSP2 design concept by Tai Chiem probably won’t be made anytime soon, but it really should.I mean, just look at the scrolling OLED screen! I think we are close to perfecting that technology, but not that close. Still, it would be nifty to have a screen that can roll up into the PSP itself. No more tiny screen, but it needs some sort of electrical charge to hold it up. I guess it uses the same “memory cloth” technology as shown in Batman Begins.

Not only does it have the rolling and scrolling action going on, but the side speakers fold inwards, presumably to hold the screen into place when it is rolled up. Rumor has it the speakers are the controls for the device. This appears to the only method of control, as I don’t see a controller or buttons.

This technology is too good to use on just portable video game consoles. I think that every cellular phone needs to be this wand-shaped thing that you can use to take and receive calls, and then roll it out to watch videos or whatever applications you care to run.

Well, as I said before, the PSP2 probably won’t be available any time soon, so if you want a new style of PSP, you’ll have to get the PSP-3000.
