In the past week or so that the iPhone 4 has been available, there’s been one major thing holding people back from from getting one. No, not the antenna issue. Instead, more people I talk to say they’re simply waiting for the white one to come out. Sadly, that’s not happening until the end of this month. But if you have cash to burn and don’t mind taking some risks, you can get one right now. Sort of.

The site WhiteiPhone4Now.com is promising to make you “one of the first in the world to own the white iPhone 4.” How? They have a DIY kit they’re selling to convert your black iPhone 4 into a white one.

The $229 kit includes the following:

* 1 x iPhone 4 Retina Display
* 1 x White iPhone 4 Front Panel
* 1 x White iPhone 4 Back Cover
* 1 x White iPhone 4 Home Button
* 1 x White iPhone 4 Digitizer (enables touch function)
* 1 x White iPhone 4 Front Panel Support Frame

Now, I have no clue if this is simply a bunch of parts from the black iPhone painted white, or if this site has made their own new parts to house your iPhone in a white case. (I assume the former if they’re including a Retina display — or at least, I hope that’s the case.) Hell, I don’t know basically anything about this site. But if you’re really, really desperate to get that white iPhone first, this may be your best bet.

The site includes a link to an iFixit guide for disassembling your iPhone 4 — this is how you’re going to have to build the phone around these new parts yourself. While the site promises that these are “easy to follow instructions,” the whole process involves some 30-plus steps including unscrewing a bunch of things, and using special tools for others. And that doesn’t include putting it back together. Yeah, it basically sounds like a big pain in the ass.

But for an extra $54 + shipping, WhiteiPhone4Now.com claims that another site, BrokeMyiPhone.com, will do the entire process for you (you include the iPhone 4 and these white parts).

The “Terms of Conditions” page on the WhiteiPhone4Now.com also notes at least one big caveat:

You will need to salvage your current iPhone 4′s front earpiece grill, the back cover’s lens cover and LED diffuser for a “complete look”, but the iPhone 4 will be 100% functional without them. As these small parts are not sold anywhere.

So obviously, this is very much try-at-your-own-risk. But if you’re desperate, this may be a way to go. Or you can just wait a few weeks and save yourself $229 and potentially one giant headache.

WhiteiPhone4Now.com promises to ship the first unit July 8. They’ll be doing so on a first-come-first-serve basis.

After WWDC this year, I got a chance to play with the elusive other color. It’s just like the black iPhone 4, but white!

Samsung Electronics has unveiled a solar-powered full touchscreen phone called “Blue Earth”.

No eco launch is complete without earthy PR speak, so the Blue Earth is apparently designed to “symbolise a flat and well rounded shiny pebble”.

More importantly, the Blue Earth is the first such phone to the market and charges up via the solar panel on the back of the phone, apparently generating enough electronic power to make a call anytime.

Adding to those green credentials, the Blue Earth is made from a recycled plastic called PCM, which is extracted from water bottles.

Both the handset, and its charger, are free from harmful substances such as Brominated Flame Retardants, Beryllium and Phthalate.

Samsung says the Blue Earth comes with a unique user interface designed “to draw attention to preserving our fragile environment”.

Screen brightness, backlight duration and Bluetooth can all be adjusted in an energy-efficient mode called “Eco mode”.

In addition there’s an “eco walk” function that lets the user count their steps with an in-built pedometer, calculating how much CO2 emissions have been reduced (and therefore how many trees have been saved) by walking as opposed to taking the car.

With recycled packaging, and energy efficient charger, the Samsung Blue Earth will be available in the UK during the second half of 2009.

We’re waiting on more specification information about the handset from Samsung and will update the story when we have it

Trying to pip the crowds at mobile phone expo, Mobile World Congress, Toshiba has announced a new phone that promises to “revolutionise the mobile entertainment world”.

Saying that it “has listened” to what consumers want, the company has announced the TG01 – a slim 4.1-inch wide VGA touchscreen handset that is 9.9mm thick.

“We’ve taken all the technology from our TVs and put that into the screen”, said the company’s manager for UK and Ireland.

Featuring the new Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, the company says the 1GHz chip will be considerably faster than any device on the market.

Users will be able to interact with the device using a virtual trackpad that will appear on screen. Instead of an accelerometer, the phone will use something Toshiba are calling a “G-sensor” that allows you to tilt the phone around a central spot.

On the tech side you’ll get HSDPA 3G and AGPS or GPS connectivity. Elsewhere you will get a microSD card for expanding the 512MB memory and there will be support for DivX.

Sporting Windows Mobile it will come with Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.1 and full flash support allowing you to watch any flash video on the phone from the Internet.

Dialaphone UK has reviewed the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone which made its first appearance in the movie ‘Dark Knight’. The phone was basically launched to compete with the iPhone, it features a 3.2 inch touchscreen, 3.2 Megapixel camera, 3G, accelerometer and all the usual stuff you would expect from a high-end multimedia phone. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic may have been a long time coming, but it was worth the wait! Not only is it a very sleek looking little handset but it has a very impressive line-up of features, raising its status to the very upper levels of the midrange and challenging those above it with its more reasonable price. We’re going to see a lot of these little phones out and about and it bodes very well for 2009’s big Nokia release, the N97.

Mention the word tundra and what is the mental image you get? Chances are, it ain’t a pretty sight. Desolate, icy cold lands with extremely harsh weather – no sane person would want to move there due to the location, unless he/she is a certified hermit who wouldn’t mind suffering from frostbite or hypothermia once in a while. Well, amidst the rugged landscape, we’re pretty sure that whatever survives in that condition are super tough, and that’s generally the idea that AT&T and Motorola want us to have with the new Motorola VA76r. This tough 3G clamshell handset features a rugged exterior that is able to hold its own in harsh environments – making it the perfect cell phone for teenagers, outdoor enthusiasts and contractors. You know how fragile those souped up 3G handsets are these days, they’re as dainty as they’re expensive.

The Tundra VA76r meets U.S. 810F Military Specifications (MIL) for drop, dust, vibration, humidity, severe temperatures and rain, making me wish I had one right now so that I won’t need to be extra careful when lugging around my phone. In addition, the Tundra boasts Motorola’s CrystalTalk Plus with dual microphone technology for superior, crystal clear conversations despite all the ruckus that’s going on around you, alongside the ability to hook up with a single person or an entire group at the touch of a button courtesy of PTT technology. Other features include voice activation, phone book locking for call restrictions, a rugged antenna and keys that can be easily pressed while wearing gloves – perfect for those who live in countries where there’s plenty of cold weather all year round.

If you’re interested in bringing the Motorola Tundra VA76r home, it will retail for $199.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate with a two-year contract. At least the Tundra is much better looking compared to rugged handsets of yore, so you don’t have to be ashamed about whipping one out in front of friends.

I guess I didn’t know that the Mobile Gaming market is growing, but I suppose it was only a matter of time before somebody made joysticks for mobile phone games. In case of the BGP100 Bluetooth Game Pad, these controllers are wireless.

The BGP100 has a 4-way pad for directional control, and seven programmable buttons for whatever else the game requires. As you can see, these controllers can affix themselves to the side of the mobile device with the use of included rubber strips.

Just think of it as turning your mobile phone into a mobile gaming device like a PSP or DS, and the BGP100 is also designed for pocket PCs as well as Pocket PC Phones. The BGP100 supports a number of platforms including Window Mobile 2003, plus the Symbian Series.

As for power, the gamepads are powered by a 1.5V AAA battery, which is good enough for three and a half hours of continual use. As far as the range is concerned, it is about 55mm with the smartphone or Pocket PC in the middle, but it can also be used from a larger distance with the Bluetooth-enabled mobile unit sitting on a desk.

Regardless of what you think of pure touchscreen devices, most can agree that the addition of a touchscreen is a welcome addition to nearly any phone out there due to its convenience. With that in mind, information on a new device from Nokia has emerged out of China that may excite a few people. Named the 6208 Classic, the device apparently runs on a version of the S40 platform that has been altered to accommodate the physical limitations of a touchscreen without adversely affecting the physical alphanumeric keypad. With that said, it’s a shame this phone is nowhere close to being a looker but we still want to check it out. As for the specs, here’s what has been reported so far:

110mm x 49.3mm x 14.7mm, 130g

Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE

2.8″, 240×320 TFT touch-screen display w/ 16-million colors

3.2 megapixel camera w/ autofocus and flash

27MB of internal memory

microSD

We’re not willing to bet that the 6208 Classic will be officially sold outside of China, but hopefully some more capable devices with similar input methods get released in this part of the world in the near future.

When our ninjas get going they don’t stop until the job is done. Yesterday your pals here at BGR gave you an exclusive preview of four tasty upcoming Motorola handsets – codenamed FLASH, RUSH 2, CALGARY and INFERNO. As sexy as they are, you didn’t think we’d stop there did you? Today we have three more exclusive looks for you and just like yesterday, each of these handsets comes bearing a codename and a date with Verizon Wireless sometime next year. First and foremost is the NIAGRA seen above. It looks almost like an updated RIZR and shows off the same sharp angles seen yesterday on the FLASH. The slider opens to reveal a RAZR-like keypad and speaking of the RAZR, we wouldn’t be surprised if we finally see the RAZR line get a more substantial refresh that echos the shapes and lines seen here on the NIAGRA. Hit the jump for a look at the next two handsets.

Above to the left you’ll find the FAIRBANKS, a rugged clam shell sporting Push to Talk (PTT) and dedicated music controls beneath the outer LCD. To the right is the HARMONY, another clam shell that we wouldn’t recommend beating on quite as hard as the FAIRBANKS. It’s sleek, sexy and also has music buttons beneath the outer LCD – but this time they’re touch sensitive. It looks like the HARMONY also has a touch sensitive mute key below the standard back, play/pause and forward buttons, along with another touch key with an unknown function. There you have it folks. 2009 has to be a pivotal year for Motorola in every sense of the word – a few more missteps and there might not be any coming back. Out of the seven upcoming phones we’ve shown you over the past few days, there are definitely a few gems that will likely be well received. At the same time however, we’re not seeing anything killer that will lead the charge for Moto as it fights gale force winds in an effort to stay afloat. What do you guys think; has anything you’ve seen so far knocked your socks off?

2009 is a new year for Motorola. The firm’s sales are tracking down, the RAZR might be dead – hopefully – but these four upcoming phones look uncharacteristically good. Little is known beside about the mobiles besides what can be gathered from the pics. The branding indicates that they are Verizon-bound and at least three of the four are touchscreens. And none of the phones have the dumb RAZR-ish names. Each one, including the Flash above, has a normal, fully-spelled product name. Hopefully these devices will breath new life into the dying mobile phone maker. We only have one question, though? Any of these powered by Google’s Android?

Product Description

Offering a sophisticated design developed with Italian luxury fashion house Prada that’s mixed with a cutting edge user interface technology from LG, the tri-band PRADA Phone by LG (KE850) brings much more to the party than just stunning good looks. Its minimalist, black-tie industrial design has been complemented by a 3-inch touch screen that enables you to control virtually all the phone’s functions with just your finger–no stylus needed. It’s also loaded with bounty of features you expect from a top-of-the-line mobile phone: 2-megapixel camera with Schneider-Kreuznach optics, Bluetooth connectivity for stereo headphones, multi-format digital audio player, FM radio, MicroSD expansion, and PIM organizer applications to keep you on schedule.

This unlocked cell phone can be used with a GSM network service provider and it provides tri-band voice connectivity (GSM/GPRS 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz), enabling you to travel the globe and stay in contact. It also can handle high-speed data connectivity via EDGE data networks, which is fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services (with average data speeds between 75-135Kbps), including video and music clips, full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and email on the go. It does not come with a SIM card, and it requires that you provide a SIM card for usage with your selected service provider.

Amazingly small with a body that measures 3.9 x 2.1 x 0.5 inches, the PRADA Phone weighs just 3 ounces (50 percent less than the Apple iPhone). The candybar has an understated, Avante-Garde design that resembles a highly styled high-definition television. It features a piano-black casing on the back and on the front surrounding the screen, and its features are softened by gently rounded corners. The sides are accented by a polished silver metal.

You’ll interact with the PRADA Phone primarily with your finger on the 3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen, which has a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels and a display capability of 256K colors. The Flash-based user interface displays glowing icons that disappear when not in use to reveal a stark black Prada theme. However, the UI can be changed to one of three pre-loaded themes–the Butterfly and Fish themes actually place a small creature on the standby screen that can follow your finger around. The standby screen is also home to the clock, which is operated with finger taps and can be dragged around the screen. The PRADA Phone offers a virtual numeric keypad, instead of a virtual QWERTY keyboard, for dialing of numbers and writing text messages (with help from the integrated T9 predictive text entry technology). The main menu system is arranged like tabbed folder pages full of icons and is intuitive and quick to learn.

The display can’t be used with a stylus because of its capacitive touchscreen technology, which requires a human touch. Coated with a material that stores electrical charges, this capacitive touchscreen uses electro-conductivity to sense your touch and then sends precise horizontal and vertical location information to the processor about the charge that gets drawn at the point of contact.

Unlike Apple’s iPhone, the PRADA Phone does have a number of real off-screen buttons and controls. The call control and back keys are on the front of the device, a lock key and a multi-function camera/music key are on the right edge, and the ring profiles key, volume control, and charger/headset port are located on the left edge.

The 2-megapixel, auto-focus camera features a lens made by Germany’s Schneider-Kreuznach, which is known for it’s high level of optics quality. It tops out at a resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels, but also offers a range of resolution choices down to 320 x 240 pixels. It includes a self-timer, three quality modes, four color effects, white balance settings, a choice of shutter sounds, and a multishot mode. You can also shoot video clips with several resolution choices (including 400 x 240-pixel widescreen, matching the PRADA Phone’s screen, and the more standard 176 x 144 QCIF).

The Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity includes profiles for communication headset, data transfer and the A2DP Bluetooth advanced audio profile, which enables you to stream audio to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. The integrated digital audio player offers support for a variety of formats (MP3, AAC, AAC+, WMA, RA), as does the video player (MPEG4, H.263, H.264). Your entertainment options are expanded even further with a built-in FM radio (which is used in tandem with the included headset attached, as it serves as the antenna).

While not fully considered a smartphone, the PRADA Phone comes equipped with document viewers offering compatibility with today’s most widely recognized file formats, including text files, PDFs and Microsoft Office documents–Word (.doc), Excel (.xls), and PowerPoint (.ppt) files. It also includes a full range of personal information management (PIM) organizer applications (calendar, to do list, world clock, unit converter, and calculator). With its fast USB 2.0 connection, the unit can also be used as a mass storage device. The phone has an expansion slot for MicroSD memory cards, which currently provide a maximum capacity of 4 GB of storage (as of August 2007).

Other features include:

Phonebook stores up to 1000 contact entries with up to four numbers, one e-mail address, and a memo field for each entry
