The iPort holder covers the devices in a wall-mounted container with a magnetically attached, rectangular front to turn them into in-wall touchscreens. The CM100 lets you use the Apple devices as a touchscreen controllers and music streamers of both stored tunes and audio from the device’s apps.

CM-IW100T (CM100) is the Control Mount for the iPod touch and the CM-IW2000 (CM2000) is for the iPad. iPort in-wall docking systems for the iPhone will start shipping similar products for the iPod touch and iPad this month, priced at $250 for the CM100 and $499 for the CM2000. I’m still not 100% convinced myself as I prefer to move around with controllers even in the same room. What are your thoughts?

I remember jamming an adapter into my tape deck years ago to make it possible to play CDs in my beat up first car. Of course I had the really bad portable CD player, the one that whenever you hit a bump it made the song skip. Now if you own a car that doesn’t have a CD player, you can still use that old tape deck for good. Just plug in the iDeck and instead of tapes you’ll be listening to your iPod as you go down the road. Luckily unlike the very old portable CD players you won’t have to worry about your driving causing the music to skip.

If you liked the old iMac monitors then you’ll love this speaker stand. It looks a whole lot like the stand those monitors used to sit on. It’s a quirky design and in some ways a little bit unnecessary, but if you’re a little nostalgic about your iMac then it’s a good way to keep it on your mind. Plus it plays your music out loud.

This does come through Chinavasion, which always makes me at least pause to wonder how great the quality is on the devices they sell. They are a great way to get gadgets that those of us in the US might not have normally been able to purchase though. The docking station has a 12W audio output and can accommodate either an iPod or an iPhone.

Heritage
At Bowers & Wilkins (B&W), the quest to develop the perfect speaker has lasted more than 40 years. The quest is to create a speaker that portrays a musical performance exactly as it was recorded, with zero coloration, as the artist intended it to be heard. Founder John Bowers instilled this passion in the company to pursue his dream of the ultimate speaker.

Design: Form Follows Function
The body of Zeppelin follows the form of its components, with two tweeters at each end, two mid-range drivers next, and a subwoofer/bass driver in the center.

B&W has complimented the iPod user interface by designing a docking port that allows you to grasp your iPod as if it were in your hand. Zeppelin also cleverly accommodates iPods of differing depth through a spring-loaded docking arm that flexes to accommodate each model without adapters or other manual adjustment.

Zeppelin is a direct descendent of B&W’s legendary reference speaker range–the 800 Series, which is sought-after by world-leading recording studios from Skywalker Ranch to Abbey Road. In fact, B&W speakers have been used in Abbey Road since the early 1980s.

Technology
Not only is the shape of Zeppelin pleasing to the eye, but it also is based on sound acoustic principles: the less physical material there is around tweeters and mid-ranges, the better they sound. Zeppelin’s rounded tapering ends aren’t there just for show. By minimizing the baffle area around the drive units, the cabinet reduces diffraction effects, making for ultra-wide sound dispersion and a much smoother response. In other words, it sounds as good as it looks.

The twin mid-range drive units that supply the bulk of Zeppelin’s amazing sound rely on glass fiber cones optimized using laser interferometry. Strategically placed resin-filled slots in the cones dramatically reduce the unwanted effects of standing waves, leaving the music sounding cleaner, clearer, and true to life.

Drive units are the “engine room” of any speaker, and Zeppelin’s mid-range and tweeter are derived directly from those in B&W’s award-winning M-1. Added to these is an internal subwoofer driver, centrally located in the deepest part of Zeppelin’s sleek enclosure, where it handles deep bass with power and authority.

Powering these drive units are three high-quality amplifiers (one for left, one for right, and one for bass). Most iPod speakers make do without the third amplifier, but Zeppelin was conceived to offer the sort of sound you’d expect from a component stereo system rather than normal iPod speakers. It will deliver all the detail and atmosphere that standard iPod docking stations miss.

Simple Operation
Zeppelin is simple to set up and use: plug it in, place your iPod on the docking port, and hit the play button. The connections at the back let you play other sources through the Zeppelin or to channel images from your iPod to a television. And Zeppelin charges your iPod while it’s docked.

Remote
Accompanying Zeppelin is a pebble-shaped remote, which allows you to change tracks and volume. The remote uses a CR2032 battery, which is included.

Compatibility
Zeppelin is compatible with all dockable iPods, including the iPod classic (3G, 4G, 5G, 5.5G, 6G), iPod touch, iPod nano (1G, 2G, 3G), and iPod mini.

Several devices other than an iPod can play sound through Zeppelin; both analog and optical digital connectivity are supported by a common auxiliary socket on the back. Apple takes an iPhone slice of Imagination

Despite public clamour over the rift between Apple and Macworld, the company’s secretive plans to develop its own mobile processors for future iPods, iPhones and other devices remain critical to its future, or so it seems. Apple’s decision to acquire the military-grade technology expertise of PA Semi earlier this year, and its more recent attempt to hire an IBM chip expert to lead its iPod team, Mark Papermaster, all contribute to what is known on its plans.

In a surprise move today, Apple took a 3.6 per cent stake in leading mobile system-on-chip graphics developer, Imagination Technologies. Apple took 8.2m shares in Imagination at 39p per share at a cost of £3.2m.

The acquisition of the stake appears to confirm rumours that Apple was the “international electronics systems company” mentioned in Imagination’s 4 September announcement about a multi-year, multi-use licensing agreement for use of Imagination’s current and future POWERVR graphics and video intellectual property cores.

These technologies – already used in iPhone – offer excellent graphics and performance at very, very low power.

In April, an Apple Insider report confirmed a secret plan between Imagination and Samsung, speculating the aim may be to build an unmatchable platform for gaming and video playback.

The current iPhone model and most other mobile devices use a version of the PowerVR MBX graphics processor core developed by Imagination. Other manufacturers also use this core, which is included under license within chip designs.

Imagination’s next generation graphics core, the PowerVR SGX, introduces OpenGL ES 2.0 support, along with a Universal Scalable Shader Engine that provides mobile devices with highly efficient, shader-based 3D graphics.

With the built in processor expertise of PA Semi already in the frame, it’s highly probable Apple’s investment in Imagination Technologies reflects the importance of its mobile plans, and likely also reflects just how close to market products enabled by this multi-company development effort have become.

Rumours currently claim imminent launch of an Apple netbook and an iPhone nano, perhaps at the now doomed Macworld Expo next month. It also now seems likely Apple is already preparing to implement these technologies within the third version of the iPhone, though I don’t anticipate this reaching market until the June quarter.

Given also Apple’s continued work on OpenCL and Snow Leopard, it’s also highly probable the company intends introducing iPhone Software 3.0, potentially at a similar moment to the launch of Snow Leopard. As we know, Snow Leopard is a highly-optimised computer operating system, what we haven’t yet been made aware of is just how many of the improvements deployed in the OS will also be migrated to the mobile version of the software, as used in iPhone.
