I remember jamming an adapter into my tape deck years ago to make it possible to play CDs in my beat up first car. Of course I had the really bad portable CD player, the one that whenever you hit a bump it made the song skip. Now if you own a car that doesn’t have a CD player, you can still use that old tape deck for good. Just plug in the iDeck and instead of tapes you’ll be listening to your iPod as you go down the road. Luckily unlike the very old portable CD players you won’t have to worry about your driving causing the music to skip.

TomTom has a couple of new GPS navigation systems for the masses in the form of the TomTom XL 350 and XXL 550 series, where these latest models will throw in the new TomTom EasyMenu as well as all the quality navigation features which have become synonymous with TomTom, where millions of customers worldwide have relied on their devices to help them get from point A to point B safe and sound in the fastest manner possible. All TomTom products that fall under the XL 350 and XXL 550 range sports sharp graphics and a simple touchscreen menu which offers speedy access to search tools, letting users get started on their journey to arrive at their destination a we bit faster – we’re talking about a few seconds shaved off here, probably. With the inclusion of TomTom’s proprietary IQ Routes Technology and TomTom Map Share, you will be able to enjoy the most efficient routing for any time of day or day of week as well as the ability to make map improvements on your device itself just while sharing these improvements with the rest of the TomTom community – without having to wait for a proper official update.

There will be a handful of devices across the new range of XL 350 and XXL 550 devices that will come with Lifetime Maps and/or Lifetime Traffic Updates :-

Lifetime Map Updates feature allows users to keep their maps fresh by downloading, every few months, the industry’s most accurate and up-to-date maps.

The maps include one million more miles than competing maps and, in certified tests, rate highest in terms of quality and reliability. Because an average of 18% of road information changes each year, maps are continually refreshed to include improvements across the entire road network and updates to points of interest (POIs). With Lifetime Map Updates, consumers always have access to the best maps available.

Lifetime Map Updates are available on XL 350M, XL 350TM, XXL 550M and XXL 550TM devices.

Lifetime Traffic Updates feature offers real-time insight into current traffic conditions to help drivers avoid delays.

The TomTom device receives the latest, constantly-updated traffic information; recalculates total drive time; and suggests more efficient alternate routes if they are available.

Combined with TomTom IQ Routes, the real-time traffic information via Lifetime Traffic Updates, ensures the smartest and fastest routing possible.

Lifetime Traffic Updates are available on XL 350T, XL 350TM, XXL 550 T, XXL 550 TM devices.

Other features include preloaded premium maps of the US, Canada and Mexico from Tele Atlas, MapShare on demand updates, IQ Routes, over 7 million points of interest, Advanced Lane Guidance and EasyMenu among others. The XL 350 4.3″ model and the XL 550 5.0″ model are also part of the new series, where the X50 range will hit the market later this May from $169 upwards for the 4.3″ model, while the 5″ model will start from $199. If you want to include Lifetime Maps and Lifetime Traffic Updates, those can be purchased by forking out another $30.

The Big Three promised to go green as part of their bailout deal. But Ford is starting in small ways, like with a new dashboard for their popular Fusion designed to encourage drivers to become more fuel-efficient by turning driving into a green game.

The company’s extensive research suggests drivers interested in fuel efficiency treat earth-friendly driving as a sport, with fuel efficiency as a “score.” The new display would give those drivers all the parameters they need to beat their “high score” — but not so much they’d be distracted from the driving task at hand and wrap their Fusion around a tree they’d normally be hugging.

That means putting an emphasis on graphics rather than numbers. On the Fusion’s dash, fuel efficiency is represented by a vine. The better your efficiency, the more buds and leaves grow on the vine. Tromp on gas, Larry Leadfoot, and watch the vine wither and die.

America is a nation that lives in its cars. Sprawling cities and big, open spaces mean that a car is a second home to many Statesiders, which is why it’s a surprise to see this in-car microwave for sale in the UK, a place where “The Countryside” exists only in the collective imagination and Four Weddings and a Funeral.

And what is it for? We can imagine this (in the US at least) being used as a kind of replacement for a real, manly fire at a tailgating party, but the product page clearly states that it is for “Meals on the move!” Surely the preparation of hot food and beverages while driving is hazardous. The only use we can possibly see for this device is to prepare dinner upon the permanent car-parks that are the roads of LA, but again, there is nothing of that scale in Blighty.

If you insist on nuking your breakfast on the way to work, the £130 ($240) In-Car Microwave will either plug into the cigarette lighter socket (thus providing a mere 175W of power) or direct to the battery, whence it will throw out a popcorn-poppin’ 660W.

And here, for those lacking in gourmet imagination, is a list of recipes from the product page, including cooking times:

The Latest Traffic Technology
The 7500 offers a choice of mobile traffic information options. First, you can choose an optional GTM 10 or GTM 11 FM antenna that allows you to get traffic alerts broadcasted by Clear Channel in select U.S. cities. This service will display congested areas on a color-coded map, allowing you to avoid traffic by simply pushing a button that calculates a new route.

If you want to step up to the next level of driving data, choose the optional GXM 30 antenna, which provides compatibility with XM satellite radio services. XM NavTraffic is the first nationwide satellite-based data traffic information service to enable an onscreen overlay of current traffic conditions. The 7500 uses this data to automatically calculate and suggest faster alternative routes long before traffic starts backing up. Accidents, road construction, or other incidents affecting traffic are graphically represented as icons on the navigation map. Precise information relating to a traffic incident is also available, including the exact location of the incident, the lanes affected, and the predicted duration. What’s more, roadways are color-coded to indicate directional traffic flow speed.

The 7500 can also keep you up to date on weather conditions, thanks to XM weather data. Current weather conditions for over 2,000 locations and weather forecasts for 162 cities are displayed on the screen. United States county storm and flood warnings are also highlighted, giving you the best and latest information available for your travels.

The 7500 can also serve as a powerful entertainment device, as it offers more than 150 channels of XM satellite radio channels, featuring 100-percent commercial-free music, as well as more than 30 channels of news, sports, and talk. You can send XM and navigation audio to your car stereo through the StreetPilot’s integrated FM wireless transmitter or via an integrated 3.5 mm stereo headphone/line-out plug. And if that’s not enough, the 7500 also comes equipped with an MP3 player that lets you take your personal music collection on the road. Loading music from your computer is drag-and-drop easy, and there’s no need for special software. The 7500 also works as an audiobook player; you can download books from audible.com and enjoy your favorite authors on the road. Plus, thanks to the 7500′s AV in connector, you can connect and play a portable device, such as a DVD player, on the unit’s massive screen. For safety’s sake, entertainment audio is muted when navigation instructions are given.

Top-Tier GPS Performance
The 7500 is a high-end GPS navigation device with text-to-speech functionality that allows the unit to audibly announce the names of upcoming streets and points of interest. This lets you keep your eyes on the road while you navigate through busy traffic and tricky roadways. The 7500′s 480 x 234 widescreen, automotive-grade touchscreen display automatically dims and brightens based on ambient light conditions. Meanwhile, an included wireless remote control can be used to operate the device’s functions.

Finding your way with the 7500 starts with inputting a location on the touchscreen. Next, the unit’s text-to-speech feature speaks to you just like a back-seat driver, telling you the names of streets and when to turn and in what direction. And if you happen to miss a turn, don’t worry–the 7500 automatically calculates a new route to your destination. In addition to point-to-point navigation, the 7500 can calculate the most efficient route between multiple destinations–a real time saver for realtors, salespeople, and errand runners. You can also tell the unit to avoid specific areas or road segments when calculating a route. With the 7500, you have the option of choosing from a three-dimensional mapping perspective or from one of several 2-D overhead viewing options. What’s more, audible and visual navigation instructions and warnings help you navigate more quickly and keep your eyes on the road.

An integrated dash-mounting system provides easy adjustment and quick release, while an integrated speaker enables the 2730 to deliver voice prompts (or, as mentioned, you can use the built-in FM transmitter to route commands to your vehicle stereo system.) An internal antenna that communicates with up to 12 GPS satellites is provided, as is a USB port for PC connectivity. There’s also an MCX-type connector for hooking up an optional external GPS antenna, as well as a SecureDigital (SD) memory card slot and a headphone jack.

Another time- and frustration-saving feature of the 7500 is the database of preloaded maps and points of interest. Gone are the days of uploading partial maps from your computer to your GPS device: the 7500 has them all built in. The unit comes preloaded with Garmin’s highly detailed MapSource City Navigator NT North America maps of the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Finding points of interest along your route is made easy with the 7500′s huge built-in database of nearly six million hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin has also made it easy for users to upload custom points of interest–now you can add school zones or safety cameras to your database. You can even turn on a proximity alert to notify you of upcoming custom points of interest.

Dead Reckoning
As a step-up feature from the 7200, the 7500 includes dead reckoning sensors to track your vehicle’s course when the GPS signal is blocked, which can occur when driving in urban areas or tunnels. If you lose GPS coverage in areas with tall buildings or tunnels, the StreetPilot 7500 keeps on navigating. This feature requires professional installation.

Note: Subscriptions are required for XM NavTraffic and XM Radio services. A subscription may be required for use of the GTM 10 or GTM 11 traffic services, which are not available in all areas.

What’s in the Box
StreetPilot 7500, MapSource City Navigator NT North America maps, integrated FM wireless transmitter, alphanumeric remote control, 12-volt adapter cable, USB interface cable, A/C power adapter, quick-release dash mount, quick reference guide, and owner’s manual.

Product Description
The StreetPilot 7500′s huge 7-inch touch-screen display means you’ll always see where you’re going – from anywhere in the vehicle. Designed for larger vehicles such as RVs, semi-trucks, and buses, 7000-series are premium automotive units that come preloaded with City Navigator NT detailed maps and display navigation, entertainment, traffic and weather on a grand sunlight-readable display. All of this, combined with the StreetPilot 7500′s dead reckoning capabilities, makes it one powerful urban navigator.

Medion has just announced a trio of new personal navigation devices (PNDs) which will come with their own AuthenTec fingerprint sensor which is meant to enhance user security and deter device theft, shipping in selected European markets. This is not new, as Medion was the pioneer when it comes to rolling out the first fingerprint-enabled PND in the world last year, so seeing three more models join its solitary brother in the marketplace shows that there is a demand for such a feature – either that or Medion is trying to create the demand itself. The three PNDs that we’ll look at today will be the GoPal P5235, P5435 and X5535.

As mentioned earlier, all three PNDs will make use of AuthenTec’s tiny form factor AES1510 fingerprint sensor when it comes to the user identification process, which means only authorized users will be able to activate the said device. This fingerprint sensor is able to store up to five different user fingerprints, allowing up to 5 people to share the device in theory, either that or in case you lose your finger in an accident (touch wood) and need to access the PND with other digits. This security feature ought to be made a staple methinks, after all, theft of PNDs aren’t exactly slowing down as they’re one of the most frequently stolen items in vehicles today.

All three models will feature a generous 5″ display so you don’t need to end up with a permanent squint when you arrive at your destination. In addition, they will boast speedy route calculation, is able to respond to input commands including voice control, and supports Traffic Message Channel (TMC) reception. The high end MEDION GoPal X5535 will come with an integrated gyrometer to compensate for temporary GPS signal loss just in case you enter a tunnel and emerge at the other end. There is no word on pricing though, but these shouldn’t cost an arm or a leg – maybe a finger. I’m kidding!

The NCC has already started working on a Goodyear-branded commercial vehicle GPS known as the GY500X. This unit was specifically designed for the trucking industry and drivers of various commercial vehicles including vans, railers, Recreational Vehicles and motor homes. This is more than a GPS built with commercial needs in mind, it was specially designed from the ground up to appeal to a trucker’s needs. Some of the key features found on the GY500X include.

Up-to-date Commercial Routes

Height Restrictions

Vehicle Weight Restrictions and Weight per Axle Restrictions

Hazardous Materials restrictions

4.3″ widescreen touch display

Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free conversation

FM Transmitter for car stereo integration

Points of Interest specific for Commercial Vehicle Drivers

In addition, the unit comes with commercial trucking-specific routes based on factors the driver can input such as vehicle height, vehicle weight, and freight contents. Talk about getting the best route calculated for you before even stepping out of the door! These units will be out sometime in the first quarter of next year.

Navigon is no stranger when it comes to GPS navigation devices, and this time they have a couple more systems that will find a place in their respective target markets. The two devices in question are the Navigon 5100 max and the Navigon 2090S, and both models are sold exclusively at RadioShack stores and its online shop, RadioShack.com. For those who have yet to pick up a GPS navigation device, rest assured that the basics are included in either device here, accompanied by Navigon’s newest generation of fast and easy to use software, coupled with regular map updates via Navigon FreshMaps.

First, let us take a look at the higher end Navion 5100 max – this model comes with a larger 4.3″ touch screen display which seems to be the norm for top line GPS devices, while free Real-Time Traffic Updates for life basically kills off any chances of you letting your spouse know that the information provided by Navigon was wrong when both of you are running late for an important appointment.

Shared features include Reality View Pro, Lane Assistant Pro, Advanced Text-to-Speech guidance announcing directions and street names, and DirectHelp which offers directions to nearby emergency service providers such as hospitals, pharmacies and road-side help, all accessible at the simple touch of a button. You will be able to receive up to eight regular map updates with Navigon FreshMaps, and these updates alone are worth slightly more than $50 if purchased separately.

As for the Navigon 2090S, this smaller model comes with a standard 3.5″ touch screen display and Fast Destination Entry with latest generation of software, in addition to all the above mentioned features.

If you’re interested in either, the Navigon 2090S and Navigon 5100 max will retail for $199.99 and $299.99, respectively. Isn’t it about time you reward yourself with something nice for the coming Christmas, never mind the economic crunch?

Highlights include a large, multicolor, easy-to-read 6-line display, plus a rotary tuning knob for added convenience. The Sportster 5, conveniently transportable between home and car, is easy to use and features Sirius’ universal dock for simple installation. Optional universal accessory docking kits and audio systems conveniently allow for use in the home, boat, office, and multiple vehicles.

An easy-to-read, six-line, 2.7-inch multi-color display helps keep tabs on the channel name and number, category, artist name, song title, and time simultaneously. The receiver also lets you program up to 30 presets of your favorite streams, as well as search by stream, artist name, song title, or category. And with a quick press of the one-touch jump button, you can instantly switch between traffic and weather reports for your city and any of your preset music, news, or entertainment channels. Other programming details include an S-Seek function that stores your favorite artists and songs and alerts you when one is playing on any of the music channels, direct station tuning via the numeric buttons, and a channel lock option. Time functions include an onscreen clock, alarm, and sleep timer, as well as a program alert that allows the unit to switch to a preprogrammed stream at a selected time.

The Sportster 5 really earns its stripes, however, with its variety of enhanced features designed specifically for sports lovers. The Game Alert feature prompts you when your favorite NFL or other sports teams are playing on Sirius. The Game Zone lists all of your favorite teams in one virtual category and lets you select a different team from each of the various sports leagues, including the NFL, NBA, NHL, and college sports. And what sports fan could do without the Sportster’s instant replay function, which lets you pause, rewind, and replay 60 minutes of live radio? As soon as you tune to a channel, the receiver automatically begins storing the audio for later playback.

The Sportster 5 also includes a built-in FM transmitter that sends Sirius radio programming to your vehicle’s FM tuner, so you don’t have to make a direct connection to enjoy the full array of channels. Simply set an empty FM frequency on your radio and tune the Sportster 5 to the same frequency. This function also works with other FM tuners, such as the one on your home stereo, but is easily paired with the car thanks to the bundled vehicle kit, which includes everything you need for listening to Sirius while driving. Parents also have control over channels and channel lockout. Measuring just 9.5 x 7.5 x 3 inches, the Sportster 5 weighs a mere 3.7 ounces.

About Sirius
In addition to 69 channels of commercial free music listening, Sirius also delivers 65 channels of sports, news, talk, entertainment, traffic, and weather forecasts.
