HP introduced a new netbook that allows users to use online resources in a novel way when they need to access and use web sites, e-mail, social networks, instant messaging, photos, music and more.

The Compaq AirLife 100 includes a 10.1-inch bright screen, Android operating system (full multitasking support), and a customized touch interface.

Definitely, HP is taking advantage of its legacy and innovation in the touch technology. This way, the customized touch interface offers a new touch navigation experience, an easy system to make zoom in and out on web pages in the browser and a set of additional touch resources and shortcuts menu.

This new netbook also reinforces the strategic agreement signed on November 2009 between HP and the European telecommunications company Telefonica to define a partnership that provides mobile broadband services to markets located in Europe and Latin America. According to the companies, HP and Telefonica have created this association in order to offer an unsurpassable online experience for customers.

There is an interesting nonofficial announcement coming from Japan: Several journalist have made public that Sony is planning to develop a smartphone where users will be able to play PSP games. In addition, apparently, Sony would be creating a device with a wide range of features, so it would not be easy to define it as a netbook, or an e-reader, or a handheld console (like PSP); actually, it would be a combination of all of them.

These projects are the reaction of Sony to Apple strategies, particularly regarding the iPad and iPhone. So, this is an interesting competition that, hopefully, will benefit the end users. But, at the same time, it could be interpreted as an obvious and meaningful evolution of the PSP, a console that has had strong competitors since it was launched commercially.

As you can imagine, the new smartphone that would be able to play PSP games won’t include slots to insert game cartridges. Instead, they could be connected to the online shop “PlayStation Store” (which is currently accessible by using a PlayStation 3 or PSP console) to download games developed for PSP. Sony Ericsson is working on this smartphone and, most likely, it will impact the mobile market in a strong way. However, it is not clear yet whether the whole PSP catalog will be supported, or only a reduced number of games. Apparently, the original games developed by Sony will be totally supported, but maybe third-party games could have some limitations, at least initially.

For the moment, the only thing we can do is to wait for official announcements and watch for the way how these projects move forward, since Sony is constantly surprising us with innovations and unexpected products. After the launch of the PSPGo, which has had very little success, the company needs a new product with a “wow” factor: That would be an opportunity to recover fans and increase earnings.

Advanced Design

Sleek & Light

At 10.2 ounces, Kindle is lighter than a typical paperback and as thin as most magazines. Barely a third of an inch in profile, you’ll find Kindle fits perfectly in your hands.

Simple to Use, No Computer Required

Unlike most electronic devices, we wanted to keep Kindle simple. Kindle is wireless and ready to use right out of the box–no setup, no cables, no software to install, no computer required.

Ergonomic Design

Kindle is easy to hold and read. We designed it with long-form reading in mind. When reading for long periods of time, people naturally shift positions and often like to read with one hand. Kindle’s page-turning buttons are located on both sides, allowing you to read and turn pages comfortably with one hand from any position.

Precise 5-Way Controller

Kindle has an easy-to-use 5-way controller, enabling precise on-screen navigation for selecting text to highlight or looking up words.

Enhanced Reading

Lose Yourself in Your Reading

The most elegant feature of a physical book is that it disappears while you’re reading. Immersed in the author’s world and ideas, you don’t notice a book’s glue, the stitching, or ink. Our top design objective was to make Kindle disappear—just like a physical book—so you can get lost in your reading, not the technology.

Paper-Like Screen

Utilizing the latest in electronic-ink display technology, Kindle provides a crisp black-and-white 6″ screen with the same appearance and readability of printed paper. Sharp and natural with no glare or backlight, reading on Kindle is nothing like reading from a computer screen. Those who see it for the first time always do a double-take. The screen works using ink, just like books and newspapers, but displays the ink particles electronically. And unlike a laptop or smart phone, Kindle never gets warm so you can comfortably read as long as you like.

Read what some of our customers have to say about Kindle’s screen:

“My first impression of Kindle’s screen was: ‘That’s a screen?! It doesn’t look like a screen.’ When I got my own, I had the same impression again. It looks like a book page, only perfect. No grain or pulp.” —Jeremy

“I love how the screen really looks like a page, because I do work at a computer all day, and the last thing I want to look at is another screen.”
—Amy P.

“I found the contrast to be soothing and I was able to read in direct sunlight with no glare.” —M. H.

“I use my Kindle for reading in bed and sitting at my desk. I also did a test read while sitting in full sun and the screen is even more readable.”
—Dallas M.

“Everyone who has seen my Kindle is amazed at the clarity of the screen, ease of use, and plethora of features.“—R.L.S.

Read in Sunlight with No Glare

Kindle’s screen reflects light like ordinary paper and uses no backlighting, eliminating the glare associated with other electronic displays. As a result, Kindle can be read as easily in bright sunlight as in your living room.

Sharp Display of Images and Photos

Kindle’s high-resolution screen boasts 16 shades of gray, so images and photos are sharp and clear. See example

Adjustable Text Size

Because one size doesn’t fit all, you can increase the text size of your favorite book or periodical with the push of a button. If your eyes tire, simply increase the font size and continue reading comfortably. Kindle has six adjustable font sizes to suit your reading preference. Now every book in your library can be large print.

Manual Screen Rotation

Manually rotate the display from portrait to landscape to view maps, graphs, tables and Web pages.

Built-In PDF Reader

Unload the loose documents from your briefcase or backpack, and put them all on Kindle. From neighborhood newsletters to financial statements to case studies and product manuals–you can take them all with you on Kindle. Native PDF support allows you to carry and read all of your personal and professional documents on the go. With Amazon’s Whispernet service, you can send your documents directly to your Kindle and read them anytime, anywhere. Some features such as annotations and read-to-me are not currently supported for PDF. You can magnify PDFs by viewing them in landscape mode. You also have the option to have your PDF document converted to the Kindle format so that it reflows. Learn more

Read-To-Me Feature

With the experimental Text-to-Speech feature, Kindle can read English newspapers, magazines, blogs, and books out loud to you, unless the book’s rights holder made the feature unavailable. You can switch back and forth between reading and listening, and your spot is automatically saved. Pages automatically turn while the content is being read, so you can listen hands-free. You can choose from both male and female voices which can be sped up or slowed down to suit your preference. In the middle of a great book or article but have to jump in the car? Simply turn on Text-to-Speech and listen on the go.

Newspaper Reading

Using Kindle’s 5-way controller, you can quickly flip between articles, making it faster and easier to browse and read the morning paper. Want to remember the newspaper or magazine article you just read? Clip and save entire articles for later reading with a single click. Newspapers are auto-delivered wirelessly to Kindle before they hit news stands.

Bookmarks and Annotations

By using the QWERTY keyboard, you can add annotations to text, just like you might write in the margins of a book. And because it is digital, you can edit, delete, and export your notes. You can highlight and clip key passages and bookmark pages for future use. You’ll never need to bookmark your last place in the book, because Kindle remembers for you and always opens to the last page you read.

Full Image Zoom

Images and photos display crisply on Kindle and can be zoomed to the full size of the screen.

Personal Document Service Via Whispernet

Kindle makes it easy to take your personal documents with you, eliminating the need to print. Each Kindle has a unique and customizable e-mail address. You can set your unique email address on your Manage Your Kindle page. This allows you and your approved contacts to send Word, PDF documents, and pictures to your Kindle via Whispernet for a small fee -see details. Kindle supports wireless delivery of unprotected Microsoft Word (DOC, DOCX), PDF, HTML, TXT, RTF, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, PRC and MOBI files. Some complex PDF and DOCX files might not format correctly on your Kindle.

You can transfer personal documents to your Kindle via USB for free at any time. Learn moreBuilt-In Dictionary with Instant Lookup

Never fear a sesquipedalian word again–simply look it up and keep reading.

Wireless Access to Wikipedia

The new Iphone 4 gs stands before the door. Beside an improved camera, a bigger screen and a quicker processor, should tie on the Iphone 4 gs, above all, to the revolution of the first Iphones. Apple brings his new Super-Smartphone in position to repulse the wave in Android mobile phones.

So impressively the Iphone has also been since his start two years ago, it never was without mistake. Regular updates of the Iphone OS have polished some rough edges. Today a lot of that what did iPhone to a revolutionary mobile device is same like two years ago. In 2008 Apple opens his Iphone to platform for external software Programmer and cut the Iphone even more on the needs of his users. During this time the first serious competitors of the Iphone have also originated, Google has published the Android platform and Palm has put on the market his new WebOS operating system. While both platforms have to make up for something, nevertheless, they mark the march direction of the technological progress, and he is called still “Iphone”. The topical Smartphones an iPhone killer would be too simply to be called and too early, it is not also the Motorola Milestone. However, Apple can rest on the other side also not on his laurels. Meanwhile there seems to be every week a new Iphone killer and sometime it will be so far. However, Apple would not be Apple if it was not about the grown competition in the picture. The enterprise works absolutely hard most near Iphone 4 gs, on the next revolution. Which features contribute to the fact that the Iphone maintains 4 gs his poles position? Up to now Apple has carried out important hardware changes in iPhone only one or twice since the original version of the device. But every hardware update has brought considerable improvements, and also for the next Iphone 4 gs of model one can expect an other step forwards. The new Iphone 4 gs will receive a bigger screen. The newest and best iPhone competitor is the Motorola Milestone and many say that 3.7 inches of display with a resolution of 480 x 854 is better than iPhone. With the Iphone 4 gs there will be anyway a display with a higher resolution.

Apple has substantially improved with the Iphone 3GS his built-in camera. Beside 3 Megapixeln, there is a huge number of software Functions, like autofocus, macro-mode and better admissions with bad lighting conditions. Nevertheless, Apple was caught up for a long time by the competition. The Motorola Milestone offers 5 Megapixel to camera with additional functions which the Iphone does not have as for example a picture stabilizer and a flash LED. Apple will have to add in Punkto on camera function with the Iphone 4 gs of model substantially. Another important point is the life span of the accumulator. The Iphone accumulator is relatively good, except one uses Wlan, GPS or starts to play plays on the Iphone. However, nowadays people want to do exactly this. The Iphone accumulator is not better or worse than that of his competitors, indeed, the user’s behaviour is with Smartphones differently than with mobile phones. The people love to use it her Smartphone and the longer they can use it without loading, they are the more contently. His distance to the competition net curtain has worked Apple, above all, by his ext. Iphone user can personalise her Smartphone with more than 100,000 applications. Also the Iphone 4 gs will continue this tradition. With iPhone one can administer contacts, provide appointments and send emails and conceive. However, all these basic functions could be reworked with the Iphone 4 gs. With Android to 2.0 and Palm Pre, one can integrate, for example, contact information from on-line services like Facebook or Xing. Nevertheless, the calendar of the IPhone is especially weak and cannot be synchronised yet with iCal. Also the email could become with the IPhone 4 gs a system so improves which one can fetch emails from several email accounts and administer multiple account about an interface. An improved Exchange support would make the Iphone 4 gs, besides, for enterprise customers more interesting and win additional converts.

What seems for a long time overdue also, a synchronisation of the Iphone is with the computer about Wlan. MobileMe and Exchange user could synchronise in future her contacts and calendar information on the iPhone over the air. Dell introduced only recently with Dell Latitude Z600 a notebook which can be charged absolutely wirelessly. Apple could use the technology straight to give the air of the revolutionaries to the Iphone again. With the Wlan synchronisation users could download contents directly into the IPhone 4 gs from the iTunes net curtain about Wi-Fi. What the present Iphone 3GS lacks clearly is Multitasking and the support of pushing news. It seems inevitable that iPhone 4 gs explaining of several concurrent applications permits, at least for important applications like Mp3 player and Instant Messaging clients. All the same as good the IPhone 4 gs becomes in Puncto hardware and software if the user to no good services receives, one can buy himself as well one iPod air. Apple could loosen the exclusive connection to a certain mobile radio provider with the publication of the IPhone 4 gs. According to analyst Apple could sell about 4% more IPhones worldwide with a free provider’s choice and take a bigger share of the market accordingly also. The wave in new Google Android Smartphones will force Apple sometime to this step. It is only the question, when this will be. In the USA Apple should be according to rumours already in conversations with other mobile radio providers. For Germany one could fancy, the Apple the old Iphone models in trade leaves and expels about alternative mobile radio suppliers, while merely the Iphone 4 gs about the exclusive partner is sold. It is unclear also how long the exclusive contracts generally run. All these improvements would do iPhone 4 gs a Smartphone of the future. It is to be known impossibly what plans Apple, but one certainly: Apple will put on the market this iPhone 4 gs with new, innovative functions sometime next year. Besides, the IPhone 4 gs will be so revolutionary like the first Iphone in January, 2007.

Computex Taipei may be over and done with for another year, but the netbooks on display at the show just keep on surfacing, and the folks at Netbooknews.com have now provided a hands-on with one that didn’t exactly get a ton of attention earlier: the J&W Minix 811. While there’s expectedly not a ton of surprises when it comes to the specs, this one does seem to be thinner and lighter than the average netbook and, even better still, it has both a matte screen and fairly large and apparently responsive keyboard. Head on past the break for the hands-on video.

Touchscreen interfaces; the delicate balance between technology and cost are slowly falling in unison and HP aims to be in the vanguard. The Touchsmart PCs have always tried to epitomize that future but the 1st gen machines weren’t exactly winners. We took the 2nd gen machines for a test drive and spoke to Randall Martin – HP’s Worldwide Director of Design for Commercial and Consumer Desktop PCs about the present and future of the Touchsmart PC line.

The meat and potatoes of the Touchsmart PC is the Touchsmart UI which overlays Windows Vista. Apps are neatly arranged in two rows; the often used ones are larger tiles on top with secondary apps below. You can rearrange them however you like. Most of the apps are right at home with your finger. Photos, videos, and music are all intuitively controlled by taps, swipes and flicks. It’s apps that require keyboard input that visibly break the whole Minority Report-esque experience. Some apps take you out of the Touchsmart UI into Windows but intelligently return when you close out of them. Good thing otherwise that quirk would be a totally annoyance.

Speaking of the Windows desktop, the touch interface works there too. Tho not as intuitive, you can open/close and move windows around. The touchscreen isn’t a capacitive touchscreen. Instead it uses camera technology to accurately pinpoint the position of your finger(s). Be it design or cost – the decision is a mistake. Sometimes it doesn’t register my finger and other times it’s hypersensitive. The key to successfully using it is to go slow and pace yourself. This isn’t the iPhone where you can wildly flick your fingers. This takes precise taps and swipes to control and manipulate.

Once you get past the whole “touch” gloss. You realize it’s a decently powered multimedia computer. You’re not going to be playing Quake or Spore on maximum settings but surfing the internet and watching HD videos are a breeze. There’s even a built-in QAM tuner for those with compatible cable. We couldn’t test this feature since we have digital optical cable but if you’re familiar with Windows Media Center, then you don’t need us to cover it here.

I couldn’t resist the opportunity to speak with HP’s head honcho of design, Randall Martin. The 2nd gen Touchsmart PCs are a huge improvement. They’re sleeker, sexier and they even look thinner. Careful attention was paid to the footprint. Minimalism was key. The face is devoid of any buttons. The keyboard and mouse are wireless without the barrage of multimedia buttons found on PC counterparts. There’s a single cable in the rear and that’s it. You turn the computer on by touching a “home” button near the bottom right of the frame. Greeted by a satisfying humm, it’s almost as if I was in some parallel universe where Mac’s were black.

The most surprisingly thing Randall told me was the loose inspiration – the idea of a messenger bag. The ubiquitous icon of storage and utilitarian function; a fitting metaphor for the computer. After all a computer is a place where one stores all their data. A place that holds the key to communicating externally with others. It’s valued and cared for. To translate those esoteric ideas. the Touchsmart sorta looks like a messenger bag. The rounded frame is bisected at the bottom right above the speaker grill – like the flap of a messenger bag. A light illuminates underneath functionally shedding light on the all black keyboard and yet the aesthetic remains clean and unobtrusive.

Perhaps the most reassuring thing was Randall’s commitment to evolving the Touchsmart line. He wants to see it thinner, cleaner, even more minimal. He wants to see more focus on the touch interface and the software behind the UI. As with any good product – if the designer can see room for improvement, then we’re all in for a treat. The HP Touchsmart PC is a good computer, don’t get me wrong. Priced around $1,500, it gives you a lot of bang for your buck but the interface is laggy. It’s not quite ready for prime time but so close. Thankfully the bells and whistles aren’t there to hide a crappy computer. Either way – be it for novel use or real computing, I think you’d be happy to come home to a piano black computer ready for your every touch and whim.
